Why won't my Shopify CSV import from a URL work?

Last updated: October 9, 2026

Simple CSV reads CSV, XLS, XLSX and XML files to create or update products in Shopify. All four formats use the same field-mapping workflow.

For a URL import, the link needs to provide the data file. A product-page link cannot be used to import the product shown on that page.

Start with what the URL opens

Open the link in your browser.

If you see a product photo with a size selector and an Add to cart button, you have a shopping page. Simple CSV cannot extract a product from that page, even though its price and description are visible.

When a URL is not a supported Google Drive or Google Sheets link and returns a web page instead of a file, the app shows this message:

That looks like a product page, not a data file. Simple CSV needs a CSV or Excel file, or a link to a product feed.

You need an export from the supplier.

Product-page links and file links

These illustrative paths show the difference without linking to a live website.

Illustrative path What it points to
/products/yellow-shorts A product page for shoppers
/exports/catalog.csv A CSV export containing product data

An XLS, XLSX or XML export can also contain the data Simple CSV needs. What matters is what the address returns. Adding .csv, .xls, .xlsx or .xml to a product-page address does not create an export.

Simple CSV reads the first worksheet of an Excel workbook. It also accepts HTML tables and SpreadsheetML 2003 XML exported with an .xls filename. An XLSX file renamed to .xls is rejected, and dates in XLS cells are imported as raw Excel serial numbers.

Ask the supplier:

Can you send me a CSV, XLS, XLSX or XML file containing your products, or a direct download link to that file?

The app's help link, “How to get a feed from your supplier →”, points to the supplier feed guide.

Using Google Sheets or Drive

Simple CSV accepts the normal sharing URL of a public, single-tab Google Sheet. For a spreadsheet with multiple tabs, publish the required tab as CSV.

For a data file stored in Google Drive, use the drive.google.com link copied from the file's Share window. Simple CSV does not support drive.usercontent.google.com download addresses or docs.google.com/document links.

The Google Sheets import guide explains the Sheet options. The Google Drive and Sheets access instructions cover Drive sharing and download pages.

Check the download progress

After you submit a URL, the validation screen first says We are downloading your file. Before the first data arrives, the bar says Preparing download...

If the source server reports the file's total size, the bar shows a percentage. If it does not, the bar keeps moving and shows how much has downloaded so far. Its screen-reader label is File download progress.

When the download finishes, the bar disappears and the heading changes to We are validating your file in the background. This switch is expected. The same download screen appears when a saved Pro or Scale automation re-downloads its source after you edit its mapping or advanced settings. A file uploaded from your computer starts with the validation message and does not show the download bar.

Check the address you pasted

If the address itself is invalid, Simple CSV shows:

That URL is not valid. Paste the full URL, including https://.

Copy the complete download link supplied by the file owner, including https://. Check for spaces or surrounding text accidentally included when you pasted it.

Search results can display shortened paths with › characters between the site and page names. That displayed text is not a download address.

Keep the supplier's link intact. Parts after a ? can determine which file or spreadsheet tab you receive, so do not remove them just to shorten the URL.

Check whether Simple CSV can access the file

Try the exact URL in a private or incognito browser window. Your normal browser may already be signed in to the supplier's website, which can hide an access problem.

If the file downloads, you have confirmed that the link works in that browser. This does not guarantee that the source server allows Simple CSV to fetch it.

If the import still fails, use the message shown in the app to choose the next step.

Sign-in or permission required

The URL requires sign-in or permission. Use a public file URL or a feed URL with access included.

Signing in on your computer does not give Simple CSV access through your browser session. Ask the supplier for a file URL that an import app can use.

Google Sheets can use this same 401 or 403 error message. For a Google Sheets source, the app shows the help link “How to allow access to your Google Sheet →”. Follow the Google Drive and Google Sheets access instructions to check its sharing settings.

Google returns a web page instead of the file

When Google returns a web page instead of the file, a supported Google Drive or Google Sheets link uses a more specific message:

Google Drive returned an access page instead of the file. Allow access and try again: https://simplecsv.com/support/google-sheets-access-denied

For a Google Sheets link, the same message starts with “Google Sheets”. The existing help link still says “How to allow access to your Google Sheet →”.

First, make the Drive file or Sheet public to anyone with the link. Google Drive can also return a page asking you to download a file anyway because it cannot scan the file for viruses. Simple CSV cannot select that button, so use a smaller file or another file host instead. Follow the Google Drive and Sheets access instructions for both cases.

No file found at the address

No file was found at that URL (404). Check the address or ask your supplier for an updated feed URL.

Check that you copied the whole address. If you did, ask the supplier whether the export moved or was removed.

The domain cannot be found

The URL domain could not be found. Check the spelling of the domain or ask your supplier for the correct feed URL.

Check the website name in the address for a typing error. If it matches the link your supplier sent, ask them to confirm that the domain is working.

The source takes too long to respond

The URL took too long to respond. Check that it opens directly, or ask your supplier whether the feed is temporarily unavailable.

Try opening the file directly. If it also fails to load in your browser, try again later or contact the supplier.

Changing your spreadsheet columns will not fix a source that is failing to respond.

The source server returns an error

The message includes the HTTP status returned by the server. In the wording below, {status} stands for that code.

The server at that URL returned an error ({status}). Ask your supplier whether the feed is temporarily unavailable.

Send the supplier the error message so they can check the feed on their server.

Another download error

For other HTTP errors, the message also includes the returned status code:

The URL could not be downloaded (HTTP {status}). Check that the link opens a file without requiring a browser session.

Test the link in a private window. If it only works after you sign in, ask the supplier how to access the export from an import app.

When no status code is available, Simple CSV shows:

The URL could not be reached. Check that the address is correct and opens a file directly.

Check the copied address and try opening it yourself. If the link works in your browser but the import keeps failing, include the exact message when asking for help.

A file that worked before no longer loads

You may also see either of these messages:

The file could not be loaded. Upload it again, or check that the feed URL still opens a file directly.

The uploaded file is no longer available. Upload the file again, or check that the feed URL still opens directly.

For a file uploaded from your computer, upload it again.

For a URL import, repeat the access check using the saved feed address. Confirm that it still returns the file and that its sharing settings have not changed.

A scheduled import completed without changes

A Pro or Scale scheduled import can finish with every counter at zero even when the URL still works. The Recent imports list shows the run as Completed. Open it to check the result.

If the detail page says No changes in the file, Simple CSV found the same file and settings as the last fully successful scheduled run. It skipped the file without touching Shopify.

Open the automation and select Run now if you need to apply the same file again. Run now always processes it. Use this after a Shopify-side change, such as sales reducing inventory or someone deleting a product.

Run the import again

Open Simple CSV from Shopify Admin and start a URL import with the working file link. Map its columns to the Shopify fields you want to use, then review the Summary page. On Free, select Start import or Start update, or use the limited action shown when the file is over 100 rows. On Pro or Scale, select Save & Run now to save the setup and queue one run without creating or changing a schedule. Select Save & Schedule only when you want to create or edit a recurring schedule.

The Shopify CSV import guide covers preparing your data and mapping columns.

Start with a small file. The Free plan supports manual URL imports with up to 100 rows per file. Scheduled imports require Pro or Scale.
